About Eczema
What is Eczema?

Eczema, or dermatitis as it is sometimes called, is a group of skin conditions which can affect all age groups.
The severity of the disease can vary. In mild forms the skin is dry, hot and itchy, whilst in more severe forms the skin can become broken, raw and bleeding. Although it can sometimes look unpleasant, eczema is not contagious. With treatment the inflammation of eczema can be reduced, though the skin will always be sensitive to flare-ups and need extra care.

What Causes Eczema?
The causes of eczema are many and varied, and depend on the particular type of eczema that a person has. Atopic eczema is thought to be a hereditary condition, being genetically linked. It is proposed that people with atopic eczema are sensitive to allergens in the environment which are harmless to others.
In atopy there is an excessive reaction by the immune system producing inflamed, irritated and sore skin. Associated atopic conditions include asthma and hayfever. Other types of eczema are caused by irritants such as chemicals and detergents, allergens such as nickel, and yeast growths.

In later years eczema can be caused by a blood circulatory problems in the legs. The causes of certain types of eczema remain to be explained, though links with environmental factors and stress are being explored.

What are the Different Types of Eczema?
Atopic Eczema
Atopic eczema is the commonest form of eczema and is closely linked with asthma and hayfever. It can affect both children and adults, usually running in families. One of the most common symptoms of atopic eczema is its itchiness (or pruritis), which can be almost unbearable.

Other symptoms include overall dryness of the skin, redness and inflammation. Constant scratching can also cause the skin to split, leaving it prone to infection. In infected eczema the skin may crack and weep (‘wet’ eczema).
Treatments include emollients to maintain skin hydration and steroids to reduce inflammation.

Cosmetic Procedures: Effects of Aging on Skin
If life is about change, skin is proof. Our skin is at the mercy of many forces as we age: sun, harsh weather, our own bad habits. But we can take steps to help our skin stay supple and fresh-looking.

How your skin ages will depend on a variety of factors: your lifestyle, diet, heredity, and other personal habits. For instance, are you a smoker or did you ever smoke? Smoking can produce free radicals, once-healthy oxygen molecules that are now overactive and unstable.

There are other reasons, too. Primary factors contributing to wrinkled, spotted skin include normal aging, exposure to the sun (photoaging), and loss of subcutaneous support (fatty tissue between your skin and muscle). Other factors that contribute to aging of the skin include stress, gravity, daily facial movement, obesity, and even sleep position.

Cosmetic Procedures: Sun Exposure and Skin Cancer
Many people love the warm sun. The sun's rays make us feel good, and in the short term, make us look good. But our love affair isn't a two way street: Exposure to sun causes most of the wrinkles and age spots on our faces. Consider this: One woman at age 40 who has protected her skin from the sun actually has the skin of a 30-year-old!

We often associate a glowing complexion with good health, but skin color obtained from being in the sun – or in a tanning booth – actually accelerates the effects of aging and increases your risk for developing skin cancer.

Sun exposure causes most of the skin changes that we think of as a normal part of aging. Over time, the sun's ultraviolet (UV) light damages the fibers in the skin called elastin. When these fibers breakdown, the skin begins to sag, stretch, and lose its ability to go back into place after stretching.

The skin also bruises and tears more easily -- taking longer to heal. So while sun damage to the skin may not be apparent when you're young, it will definitely show later in life.

What's giving away your age?
WebMD Feature from "Good Housekeeping" Magazine

By Holly Crawford
Birthdays happen, but looking older is optional. Here's how to take years off-without keeping your hands in your pockets.

Our secret plan for defying Father Time: Think beyond the crow's-feet. "Most women are so conscious of every little wrinkle on their face, they forget about the other body parts that may be showing some wear and tear," says Jeanine B. Downie, M.D., a dermatologist in Montclair, New Jersey.

So by all means, let's deal with those wrinkles-but aging affects everything from the whiteness of your teeth to the thickness of your hair, so it's imperative that you address your problems from head to toe. The key thing to remember:
Every sign of aging boils down to changes in texture and color.

The rich sheen of your hair begins to fade; skin that was smooth grows rough. Likewise, every remedy involves preventing, reversing, or at least compensating for those changes. So choose your weapons, and let the counterattack begin.

Dry Skin Treatment May Have To Start in the Laundry Room
Although soap has been used to clean clothes for nearly 4,000 years, it has undergone a number of transformations which eventually led to our present day detergents. Manufacturing detergent is much less expensive than soap, and it has a number of other practical properties, but it is not the best thing for your clothes or your skin.

In fact, detergent can cause and exacerbate dry skin and other skin problems. Using a natural dry skin treatment is a must to offset the damage, but you might find that reverting from detergent back to soap will also be beneficial.

Beauty Sleep
How to make the most of skin's downtime and wake up with a new glow

If the number of night creams coming onto the market is any indication, the right time to pamper your skin is when you hit the sack: Last year consumers spent about $56 million on nighttime moisturizers alone. Although no scientific studies have been published comparing nighttime with daytime products, there may be some advantages to treating your skin while you slumber.

Grooming Essentials for Women: Skin and Hair Care Products
There are hair care and skin care products galore for women. Which ones do you need to look your best?

How many hair products does one girl need?” my mother once asked after a visit to my more-than-well-stocked bathroom. The secret was out: I was a product junkie. I have shampoos for fine hair and “winter hair,” shampoos to make my hair shiny, shampoos to make my hair smell like pink grapefruit, apple blossoms, oranges, or coconut. And, of course, each of these is paired up with a matching conditioner.

And don’t even get me started on skin care products -- cleansers, soothers, moisturizers – all for sensitive skin – not to mention countless cosmetics.

23 Ways to Reduce Wrinkles

How to Reduce Wrinkles: What You Can Do

1. Avoid the sun. It's the No. 1 cause of wrinkles, with dozens of studies documenting the impact. In one study that looked at identical twins, New York plastic surgeon Darrick Antell, MD, found sun exposure was even more important than heredity. Siblings who limited sun time had fewer wrinkles and looked younger overall than their sun-worshiping twins.

Wake up your winter feet
Spring is just around the corner, so get your feet ready for sandal weather and beautify your soles in six easy steps.

By Pamela Ferris-Olson
Contributing Writer

Wednesday, March 14, 2007

Don't be embarrassed. Get your feet ready to go bare.
With sandal weather fast approaching, it's a great time to tackle dry skin, calluses and any other problems your feet have encountered this winter.

"Not everyone is born blessed with pretty feet, but everyone can have well-groomed feet," says Chondalyn King, managing manicurist at the new Square One downtown's salon and day spa in Centerville. King views feet as an extension of the wardrobe.

Whether you have a do-it-yourself approach to foot care or prefer to visit a salon for a professional pedicure, King says that foot care should never be painful. If you experience any discomfort, someone's doing something wrong or there's a medical problem that needs to be addressed.

Discolored toenails, signs of fungus or bacteria, or inflammation require medical attention.

Proper foot care should relax and beautify. And, King's six-step plan is sure to result in happy feet.

Winterizing Your Hair Care
Experts say harsh winter weather and a change in temperatures can be hair's No. 1 enemy. Here's why -- and what to do.

From hat hair to static electricity, split ends to dry frizz, when winter weather hits, a bad hair day can last an entire season. In fact, even if you live in a moderate climate, experts say you're still susceptible to hair-raising changes as the seasons pass.

"The environment can have some of the most damaging effects on hair in both summer and winter, but in winter it's often worse because people generally don't take as many precautions to protect their hair," says celebrity stylist Nick Chavez, owner of the Nick Chavez Beverly Hills Salon and a QVC hair care expert.

Skin Care: It's Not Just for Women
Experts explain how men's skin can stay healthier with help from a range of products and regimens.

For many men, "skin care" is something their wives or girlfriends do. Reaching for the shaving cream, they knock over bottles of moisturizers and creams and wonder if all those expensive potions and their exotic ingredients are even worth the plastic they're packaged in.

So it's not surprising that many men react to new male-oriented lines of skin care products by assuming they're mere marketing ploys aimed at separating self-absorbed men from their money.

Natural Skin Care Treatments
For great natural skin care, it's time to say bye-bye Botox and hello ... blueberries?
The fountain of youth may actually be located in your kitchen, not your plastic surgeon's office.

"Through a three-tier approach involving diet, supplements, and creams, we can control the rate at which we age," says dermatologist Nicholas V. Perricone, MD. "And we can delay the need for surgical procedures, including facelifts, by 15 to 20 years -- if we even get them at all."

Spa Rx: Cellulite Plight
Lots of Spa Hype, Little Scientific Knowledge, and No Magic Bullet

I happen to like cottage cheese. makes a nice breakfast, spread on a whole wheat bagel, or with fruit for a light lunch. I just don't want it on my thighs.

Like almost every other woman not currently a Ford model, I've become familiar with cellulite--a word that didn't enter the common parlance in this country until about 30 years ago, coined, reputedly, by the owner of a New York skin-care spa. But the dimpled, puckered, waffled, cottage-cheesy skin that sets off an alarm at the approach of bathing-suit season is certainly not new: Just look at Renoir's Grandes Baigneuses or Manet's models having their dejeuner sur l'herbe. You'd think that something so venerable, so visible, and so vanity wounding would be understood by now.

Although cellulite is sometimes referred to by the mouth-filling and scientific-sounding name dermatomyoliposclerosis (der-ma-to-my-o-lip-o-scler-o-sis), the term does not exist in recognized medical references.

Marine Corps
A new wave of ocean-based beauty products extols the virtues of algae, but is the power in the ingredient or in the marketing?

There's something magical about skin and seaweed. Larch Hanson, who harvests seaweed from a small boat off the rock-ribbed coast of Down East Maine, says everyone who handles laminaria digitata, a species that looks like it has fingers and is a common ingredient in skin-care products, "notices a difference in the way their skin feels."

And that's true whether they've been raking slimy strands of it from icy water or hanging it in drying rooms where the temperature exceeds 100 degrees. "This stuff makes your skin really smooth," says Hanson.

Remember the commotion caused by the arrival in the late '80s of Retin-A? A low-tech acne medication derived from vitamin A, Retin-A was a dermatological first: a cosmetic product that had been scientifically proved to help erase fine lines.

This breakthrough was considered so big that it was heralded on the national evening news. Although it's still commonly prescribed to improve skin imperfections, Retin-A, now marketed under the name Renova, seems quaint in comparison to the high-tech skin-smoothing options developed since then.

Eye Openers
A guide to new products, spa treatments, and accessories with one sharp focus .
Given that the eyes have inspired so much amorous verse, from ben jonson's "drink to me only..." to Cervantes's calling them "silent tongues of love," it's poetic injustice that they age fastest of all facial features.

Biology is largely to blame: The skin around the eyes is thin and lacks sebaceous (oil-producing) glands, which keep skin moist and thus young-looking, explains plastic surgeon Norman Leaf, M.D., the owner of Leaf & Rusher Skin Care in Los Angeles.

But sun damage is a major culprit, too. "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun," wrote Shakespeare. Good thing, because UV rays cause collagen to break down and age spots to appear. The windows of the soul become the panes of time's passage.

That's why eyes are the focal point of a new wave of specialized skin care meant to shore up their vulnerabilities and our vanities. "Our customers are extremely educated about skin care; they know that the anti-aging attack really begins with the eyes," says Lynne Florio, the president of La Prairie, which now makes six eye products.

The Thinking Woman's Guide To Skin Care
Mineral Makeup: Rock solid or just romancing the stone?

I recently saw a visually striking ad for bareMinerals that showed a spray of loose powder and a makeup brush, along with this promise: Makeup so pure you can sleep in it. Its one of the many claims made by mineral makeup lines, a cosmetic genre that has taken off in the past three years by turning the notion of traditional cosmetics inside out: Instead of concealing flaws, mineral makeup claims to prevent them, mainly by forgoing preservatives and ingredients such as cornstarch and talc that provide coverage but often irritate skin.

These products also often go one step farther, promising to improve the skin itself.
BareMinerals (as well as the ad for it) was branded by Leslie Blodgett, who hawks the line on QVC. And heres her pitch: Traditional makeup contains talc, fragrance, preservatives, binders, and other possible skin irritants. Most of these are meant to help market the product not help the skin. BareMinerals was developed for those with rosacea, sensitivities, and acne, for women who couldnt wear makeup or whose skin reacted to it.

Getting Under Your Skin
Cutting-edge skin care is now less about ingredients than infiltration--getting the product precisely to where it can do the most good.

For years, women have been conditioned to pay close attention to the ingredients in skin-care products. Whether the contents are botanical like elderberry extract, chemical like alpha hydroxy acids, or biological like colostrum, we all want to know: What's in this stuff that makes it work?

Exercise and Aging Skin
Along with a healthy diet, lots of water, supplementation, stress management, and sun protection, staying active is an important and integral part of staying healthy. When related to the aging of our skin and preventing the early signs of aging, there are some things about exercise that you may want to consider.

Can Exercise Fight the Signs of Aging?
It can certainly help - if not directly, then at least by promoting other parts of a healthy lifestyle that directly fight the signs of premature aging. Exercise improves circulation and invigorates skin, helps supply oxygen to skin cells, and is great way to combat stress. All of these are factors when trying to maintain a youthful appearance.

There is a consensus, however, among skin-care providers that too much exercise can actually promote the signs of premature aging, so be careful not to overdue it. Factors involved with exercising that may cause premature aging involve weight loss and a decreased resistance or exposure to free radicals. A large amount of weight gain or weight loss as a result of a rapid change in lifestyle and exercise patterns can cause the skin to loose its elasticity, resulting in wrinkling - so moderation and slow, progressive changes in exercise programs are recommended.

Things to Consider In Your Exercise Program
Some factors to consider that may not have occurred to you about your exercise program is how they affect your skin. If you exercise outdoors, for example, it is important to consider that you are exposing your skin to not only the effects of pollution but to sun damage as well. Even on cloudy days, an estimated eighty-percent of the suns UVB and UVA rays make it through to penetrating our skin. To help fight the negative effects of this exposure, experts recommend applying an SPF 15 or greater that protects against both types of rays at least 30 minutes prior to working out and wearing a hat that limits the amount of direct sunlight.

It is also recommended that individuals who engage in large amount of outdoor cardiovascular activity supplement their diets with Lipoic acid, Ascorbic acid, and Glutamine fifteen minutes prior to exercise to help ward off the vulnerability to oxidative damage .

If you are a swimmer or spend large amount of time in the water as part of your exercise program, you know that the chemicals in water can wreak havoc on the balance of skin. It is important to wash the skin immediately after working out to prevent the damage these chemicals can do and follow up with a chemical-free, fragrance-free moisturizer.

The best bet for avoiding irritation or damage to your skin during exercising is to try to make sure it`s clean by washing it before you begin working out as the rise in temperature will help any harmful agents sink deeper into our pores. If you must wear make-up during a workout, make sure it`s an all-natural, mineral and water based foundation. And, of course, drink plenty of water before, during, and after your workout to prevent dehydration and those pesky little wrinkles!

Tips for Keeping Fit in your 40’s and 50’s
Today, the population pushing through middle-age is often referred to as the “Baby-boomer” generation - a group born in the forties and fifties and whose oldest are pushing sixty. In a society where youthful looks are one of the most sought-after possessions and many are willing to do just about anything to obtain them, the pressure on this generation to stay fit and retain a youthful appearance is high.

The pressure to stay fit in middle-age isn‘t necessarily a bad thing. With so many in our society becoming obese and out-of-shape, people in their 40’s and 50’s have a great positive influence to watch what they put in their bodies, keep moving, and do what’s right for their health. It is important to remember that as we age our bodies change in regards to limitations, what works and what doesn’t work, what’s good and what’s healthy, and what moderation is.

Things Just Aren’t What They Used To Be
While it’s great that people in their 40’s and 50’s are making an increased effort to stay in shape throughout middle-age, fitness experts want to emphasize that what worked in your 20’s and 30’s will no longer be the best for your body now and may, in fact, actually cause damage. A condition often referred to as “Boomeritis” by fitness professionals, applies to the sports-related injuries suffered by members of the Baby-boomer generation that don’t accept their bodies new limitations.

The saying “No pain, no gain”, was commonly heard in the fitness arena during the youth of Baby-boomers and has, in part, contributed to this generations belief that the pain they feel during or after workout is a good thing. Middle-aged individuals seeking to stay fit need to remember that the routines of their 20’s and 30’s must be revamped to consider less flexion and elasticity in joints and muscles, a diminished cardio capacity, and a higher prevalence of injury.

What You Can Do To Be Your Best In Middle-Age
The body now has different nutritional needs as well. Experts estimate that beginning in our late twenties and early thirties, it is not uncommon for most people to gain an average of three pounds a year. We must remember that our bodies are a little less forgiving than they used to be. And it isn’t just a myth - gone are the days when you could scarf three pieces of pizza and not notice a thing.

Reality is that in our 40’s and 50’s we need to be more aware of the things we should and shouldn’t be putting in our bodies. Healthy omega-3 fatty acids are even more important, a balanced and low-calorie diet, and a good amount of moderate, non-strenuous exercise are the best things for keeping fit in this time of your life and will do wonders to promote health in your senior years. Experts warn against overdoing exercise and suggest light to moderate weight training and nice long walks.

Keeping everything in moderation will ensure your healthiest self in your 40’s and 50’s.

Aromatherapy: What it can Do and what it Can’t
The use of aromatic oils as healing agents has been around for much of recorded history, but the term aromatherapy was first coined in the 1920s by René Maurice Gattefosse.

Gattefosse was a French chemist who became interested in the healing properties of essential oils after his arm caught fire in his perfume factory and he extinguished it in a vat of lavender oil. He noticed that the pain subsided and the wound healed quickly with no scarring.

Ever since, there have been claims – some substantiated, but many not – of healing and therapeutic uses for a variety of distilled plant oils.

Aromatherapy 101
Depending on where you live in the world, aromatherapy is either seen as a valid branch of medicine or as a pseudo-science. In France, for instance, some essential oils are regulated as prescription drugs and doctors use them in a variety of applications as antiseptics and anti-inflammatories.

However, in the United States, for example, the lack of substantial scientific studies leads many in the medical community to dismiss aromatherapy as a viable treatment option.

Essential oils and other aromatherapy compounds work in a few different ways. The scent alone – whether form incense or heating the oils – activates the limbic system and emotional centers of the brain. When these oils are applied to the skin – most commonly as massage oils – they can activate thermal receptors and kill microbes and fungi.

French doctors use this application regularly by applying various essential oils to Petri dish cultures of patient infections to see which oils slow the spread of the infection the best.

Popular Applications
· Basil is used to sharpen concentration, to help treat depression, and to
relieve headaches and migraines.
· Bergamot, the flavor you taste in Earl Grey tea, may be beneficial to
both the urinary tract and the digestive tract. It is useful for skin
conditions linked to stress, such as cold sores and chicken pox,
especially when combined with eucalyptus oil.

· Black pepper can be used to stimulate circulation and to treat muscular
aches and pains. When applied to the skin, it can be a useful treatment
for bruises.
· Tea Tree Oil (Melaleuca Oil) can be used as a topical antimicrobial and
as an antiseptic and disinfectant.

· Clove oil can be used as a topical analgesic especially useful in dentistry
as well as an antiseptic.
· Lavender oil can be used as an antiseptic, to soothe minor cuts and
burns, to calm and relax, and to soothe headaches and migraines.

· Yarrow oil is used to reduce joint inflammation and relieve cold and
influenza symptoms.
· Jasmine, Rose, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang oil are used as
aphrodisiacs.

What The Critics Are Saying

In general, medical professionals in the U.S.A. and England concede that although pleasant-smelling oils can be relaxing and have therapeutic properties like lowering stress, the lack of scientific study and hard evidence makes it impossible to estimate the effectiveness of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy supporters are quick to point out that since essential oils cannot be patented and most medical research is funded in some way through pharmaceutical companies, there is little or no interest, let alone funding, to study these natural remedies.

Conspiracy theories aside, one very valid point that many detractors bring up is that some patients may be enticed to try aromatherapy alternatives in place of proven medical procedures or medications.

Is Aromatherapy For You?
Depending on your ailment, aromatherapy might be just what the doctor ordered. For mental applications such as stress reduction and alertness, many people swear by it. For more serious medical conditions, talk it over with your doctor first.
