Remember the commotion caused by the arrival in the late '80s of Retin-A? A low-tech acne medication derived from vitamin A, Retin-A was a dermatological first: a cosmetic product that had been scientifically proved to help erase fine lines.

This breakthrough was considered so big that it was heralded on the national evening news. Although it's still commonly prescribed to improve skin imperfections, Retin-A, now marketed under the name Renova, seems quaint in comparison to the high-tech skin-smoothing options developed since then.
