Given that the eyes have inspired so much amorous verse, from ben jonson's "drink to me only..." to Cervantes's calling them "silent tongues of love," it's poetic injustice that they age fastest of all facial features.
Biology is largely to blame: The skin around the eyes is thin and lacks sebaceous (oil-producing) glands, which keep skin moist and thus young-looking, explains plastic surgeon Norman Leaf, M.D., the owner of Leaf & Rusher Skin Care in Los Angeles.
But sun damage is a major culprit, too. "My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun," wrote Shakespeare. Good thing, because UV rays cause collagen to break down and age spots to appear. The windows of the soul become the panes of time's passage.
That's why eyes are the focal point of a new wave of specialized skin care meant to shore up their vulnerabilities and our vanities. "Our customers are extremely educated about skin care; they know that the anti-aging attack really begins with the eyes," says Lynne Florio, the president of La Prairie, which now makes six eye products.
